Publication Description

This publication came about from the Data Public Awareness Campaign as a component in the Center's MENAdata Project. The main objective of the Public Awareness Campaign was to raise awareness amongst the different stake holders, including data users and data producers, about the potentials that data analytics can provide towards achieving responsible development.  In addition to this, the public awareness campaign contributed to the marketing and promotion of the “Data for Fair Development” and its various activities.

The Public Awareness campaign targeted the following groups:

  • Data users and producers working in different sectors and who can benefit from the skills and knowledge in data analytics
  • Young professionals aiming to enhance their professional careers in the areas of data analytics 
  • Decision makers who can influence and facilitate access to data and data analytics process
  • Public Awareness Plan
  • In order to plan for the PA campaign, the project team conducted several activities including:
  • Brain storming sessions with team members
  • Interviews with experts in the field of data analytics
  • Review of available resource that raise awareness on the potentials of data. 

Based on this, it was agreed to focus on four main sectors to target in the PA campaign. These sectors were also identified for the capacity building component with the metadata project. The sectors are: Health, Agriculture, Human Rights and Economic Development. 
The public awareness plan was based on developing and producing a set of communication tools in Arabic Language that can transfer knowledge and draw attention to the potentials of data usage, the tools included the following:

For Human Rights

  • A round table discussion was conducted with professionals and activists working in human rights organizations and during the workshop the audience was introduced to the concept of open data, and a discussion was made on the needs to build awareness and capacities on the potentials of open data analytics for the benefit of human rights. During the workshop, project team also presented the outline for the Human Rights Data literacy program and received very positive feedback on the proposed outline
  • An info leaflet was developed in Arabic language to present ideas and case studies related to data based Human Rights solutions.
