Al-Haq: Damage Caused by the Israeli Occupation

Al-Haq is an organization focused on obtaining and conducting research on human rights violations undertaken by violators irrespective of their background. They work on monitoring and reporting such violations to fight against perpetrators while supporting the case of the innocent. Along with other human rights organizations, Al-Haq has successfully identified violations done by the occupation in terms of international law. Moreover, they have been a source of documentation for such violations since 1979 in Palestine.

During the Data Journey program, Al-Haq members were paired with IT specialists to work on a data product that would be beneficial to the organization. The product was centered on creating a database to hold all the information collected by the organization. The platform would then be able to detect trends, patterns, and create visuals to better represent the information for all the different departments of Al-Haq. Hence, creating a means to quickly identify international violations, locate coordinates of such violations,  enhance evidence-based defenses, and build on research respective to Palestine.

Additionally, it allows for the organization to make data-driven decisions and analyze the data with confidence in a responsible and ethical fashion. “The team for Al-Haq will use the application but also future wise it will be available for other departments such as the international advocacy, law department, etc. If we succeed with this phase in the startup, we might create a public dashboard for the target audience, like other researchers not associated with the organization. This will give us the means to make such data accessible for all to use in identifying violations”, stated one of the Al-Haq team members.

At the current moment, the application is making its way into the Al-Haq organization and prospectively will be a source for human rights researchers, workers, and activists to make data-driven research, decisions, and defenses.
