Ongoing Research<\/h2>\n\n
The effectiveness of xLOBs is attributed to an on-going design-based research that was carried out at every stage of the development cycle and continues to do so. Research was done around the integration of different learning approaches, emerging technologies, specific skills, among others.<\/p>\n\n
A research unit was established at the Center for Continuing Education called The Unit for Learning Innovation (ULI). The ULI started its research work on creating and experimenting with learning designs that support or complement the existing educational system. It was agreed that since Palestine has well-established educational institutions that reach every child, working with and from within the system would be the most effective, efficient and scalable approach.
\nThe research question that guided our work stated:<\/p>\n\n
\u201cWHAT DOES IT TAKE TO SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES KNOWING THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE THE TRANSFORMATION USING THE CLASSICAL EDUCATIONAL APPROACH, AT NO ADDITIONAL COST OR RESOURCES?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n
With this in mind, we set out on a journey of design, research, development, re-design and on-going investigations, reflections and reviews. The xLOBs that are being implemented today in 300+ schools are a product of this 10-year R&D activity. <\/p>\n\n

A special focus of our research was to understand the gender-based needs and how to adjust the digital tools to the constrains and needs. Gender experts worked in cooperation with the whole team in all stages. Beginning with the research phase and continuing through working with all stakeholders from a gender sensitive perspective that takes into consideration gender attitudes, perceptions, practices, roles and needs that stem from the gender roles and simultaneously gearing toward transforming them in just ways.<\/p>\n\n

\nResearch results<\/h3>\n\n
A statistical sample of students was monitored over a full semester and performance metrics were aggregated. The following table is a summary of improved performance for the four dimensions covering the 12 standard life skills. The research leading to the above research is being continued as the scope of the model is expanded.

Past Research Activities<\/h3>\n\n

In 2013 we carried out the design-based research on xLOBs being piloted in 50 schools. The research was carried out in partnership with the Swiss Center for Innovation in Learning (SCIL).<\/li>\n\t
In 2015 we completed a follow-up research on the same schools (after making modifications to the design based on the initial research findings).<\/li>\n\t
In 2017 we completed a third research based on the implementation of xLOBs in grades 1 and 3 in 20 schools.<\/li>\n\t
We are currently carrying out two research studies, one for xLOBs for grades 1-4 being implemented in 100 schools \u201c building on the results of the previous research, and one for xLOBs (Empowering Girls through Digital Learning Innovation) for an additional 100 schools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

Maintenance<\/h2>\n\n
Once xLOBs are developed, they become a very powerful resource for teachers. xLOBs capture innovations and educational knowledge and feed them into a national bank that can be used, re-used and built upon indefinitely (as opposed to typical programs that produce one-time outputs that end with the end of their funding cycles).<\/p>\n\n
As more teachers shift their teaching methods into those of Lobs and begin to mainstream the model in their teaching practices, the more teachers will begin to contribute to the Lobs bank and crowd source it. An on-line platform will be needed to allow teachers to crowd source new Lobs ideas and designs into the platform or suggest modifications and additions to existing ones. Teachers with limited access (teachers with extra responsibilities, those with special needs and those with restrictions on movement) will benefit most from online resources. The online components will also keep instructions and resources up to date and cater for those who only require minimal training

Ongoing Monitoring & Evaluation<\/h2>\n\n
Our design and development methodology is always based on a participatory approach, where we engage the target groups in the development of the framework and we engage them in the on-going monitoring and evaluation of the work being implemented. Apart from training, mentorship the development process also involves peer, expert, and student reviews, reflections, research and redesigns.<\/p>\n\n
Each xLOB includes an assessment metric that measures their ability to achieve the skills and knowledge designed into each LOB, which provides a very effective means for monitoring and evaluation and for providing feedback on LOBs as they are being designed. There is an on-going monitoring and evaluation of every aspect of the design process and the implementation of xLOBs in schools with emphasis on the measurement of learning outcomes, acquisition of skills and teacher practices.<\/p>\n\n
Research findings are constantly being fed back to the xLOBs design teams to carry out any necessary modifications and\/or to address specific issues in future designs. For example, knowledge acquired from the implementation of xLOBs at UNRWA schools, needs and required modifications, or additional focus on issues like inclusive education, human rights, psychosocial support and others, are addressed \u201c either by updating existing xLOBs or by developing new ones.<\/p>\n\n

After, a careful selection of the team, all team members joined an extensive training program that covered the entire life-cycles of xLOBs development. The team also designs an assessment metric that measures the xLOB ability to achieve the skills and knowledge designed to be achieved. <\/p>\n\n
Apart from designing evaluation methods, teachers are encouraged to build on the xLOBs, the ones that do not have the time to do so, use the xLOBs as is, and by doing so, raise the learning bar for the students regarding the quality of education.<\/p>\n\n

Note 1 The R&D team had a difficult time identifying a suitable framework for the integration of life skills: which skills to use, what to call them, how to frame them, and how to measure them. The team then began to suggest skills from the LSCE framework (link to LSCE framework Article) to be integrated into various units within the text book making sure that the entire set of skills in LSCE is covered sufficiently in the text book. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
Note 2 xLOBs have been designed so that the time required to implement an xLOB is almost the same as the time required to cover a unit in the text book the traditional way. Only a group of subject matter experts (or distinguished teachers) are needed in the production phase. xLOBs do not only talk about \u201ceducational best-practices\u201d, they provide a process \u2013 a tool that makes these practices work. The tools, activities, and objects are documented in an xLOB document called a learning object. Each xLOB relates to one of the units in the school textbook, each unit may have multiple xLOBs. The xLOB document includes the following, for example sake (see next page).<\/p>\n\n
The Learning activities varies by subject and unit of the book. They are essentially applications of the knowledge in contexts that are meaningful and stimulating to students and seamlessly integrate life-skills and citizenship education with subject content. They are designed to entice students to constantly produce knowledge that is where learners internalize and reinforce what they learn.<\/p>\n\n
The Instructional strategies glue and integrate the different elements of the learning object together. They are structured to be easy to follow and designed to support teachers deploy strong pedagogy as they facilitate learning with xLOBs. They demand that teachers constantly reflect and develop their learning practices as they deal with the unpredictable learning outcomes and behaviour of their students.<\/p>\n\n

Teacher Training<\/h2>\n\n
Although students are at the centre of the learning process, the best way to empower them is by empowering their teachers, principals and advisors, as educators and mentors<\/p>\n\n
The theory of change behind our training approach is based on the fact that practically all teachers undergo various teacher training programs in which they study the various modern educational theories and principles. What teachers typically lack is support and mentoring in the design of good, stimulating and pedagogically sound lessons and how to apply them in the classroom. With xLOBs, teachers receive initial intensive training on the design principles behind xLOBs. This serves to refresh their knowledge on modern educational principles and practices, and provides them orientation on how to use good teaching principles to facilitate learning with xLOBs in the classroom. <\/p>\n\n
Because teachers have various capacities and skills, some can design and develop full learning objects, others are good at modifying or adapting existing units, contributing new ideas or production tasks. The majority of teachers will only participate in the delivery and assessment of the learning objects. So, Instead of putting thousands of teachers through an extensive re-training process to qualify them to independently implement the new curriculum , all teachers require are short workshops (over 3-5 days) supported with on-line resources and self-learning activities. Soon, training and orientation for teachers will also be delivered online as e-learning in order to reduce the cost of scaling up xLOBs.<\/p>\n\n
After training the teachers are ready to implement the xLOB in their schools. Implementation<\/h2>\n\n
xLOBs enhance teacher professionalization by using xLOBs as a highly applied and effective means for teacher professional development. As teachers work with xLOBs, they will become exposed repeatedly to good educational designs in every unit they teach. Throughout the year, the teachers will receive on-going mentoring, support, and will engage in reflection workshops and communities of practice. Teachers will be required to continuously reflect on the xLOBs and teaching practices, critique them, propose alternative approaches, and eventually design their own xLOBs.<\/p>\n\n
The effectiveness of xLOBs is measured by the cost and time for implementation. Concerning the cost, first, xLOBs are distributed free of charge, second, the only objects that need to be purchased by the educational institution are minimal and can be found anywhere. Important resources, such as instructional videos, research articles, and others are included with the xLOB also free of charge. Regarding, time: the amount of time that it takes for teachers to deliver the xLOB is approximately the same amount of time it used to take them to deliver the lesson with the traditional way.<\/p>\n\n
Implementation is also done in a way that does not disrupt or threaten the existing establishments nor create resistance to change. As the implementation is done in partnership with official educational authorities, learning objects will be institutionalized within the existing administrative structure where scaling up becomes the responsibility of the official educational bodies.

The impact of xLOBs in the long run goes beyond just the educational sector in Palestine. We envision a change in the communities as a whole, when children taught under xLOBs grow up and become the women and men of the future, they will introduce their new ways of thinking, problem solving, emotional responses, cooperation, coordination, and others to their households, workplaces, and circle of friends. We perceive, we learn, we influence, and we build.<\/p>\n\n
The learning objects approach also addresses the full educational ecosystem starting from the curriculum but not ending with the student, teacher or school.\u201c it even tackles the local environment and works with other influencers on the student personality and well-being. All previous pilot projects using learning objects and upcoming research and studies will be monitored closely and studied carefully to identify and quantify the impact xLOBs is making.<\/p>\n\n
